Fine Hair Confessions From An Award Winning Hair Stylist - Who Gets It!
Can we have an honest chat about fine hair? I mean really honest.
I was never blessed with thick, lustrous locks. Looking back at my childhood photos, sure, there was more of it, but it was always on the finer side.
Fast forward to now - 41, two kids, perimenopause knocking on the door - and let's just say my hair has decided to become even more... selective about staying on my head!
If you're nodding along, thinking "this is exactly me," then grab a coffee (or wine, no judgment here), and let me share everything I've learned about keeping our precious strands where they belong - on our heads!
First, Let's Talk About The Emotional Stuff
You know that moment in the bathroom, harsh lighting overhead, when you're trying to style your hair and it just... won't? I get it. As an award-winning hair extensionist, I've had countless women in my chair whispering these same concerns. The thing is, we're not alone in this - and there are things we can do.
My Daily Hair-Saving Routine (That Actually Works)
Let me walk you through exactly what I do - and trust me, every single step matters when you have fine hair!
Before Washing (Yes, This Bit's Important!) Think of your hair like your favorite silk blouse - it needs gentle handling when it's most vulnerable.
Before water touches your head:
Grab a gentle brush (those cheap plastic ones are not our friends!)
Start from the very bottom (seriously, last 2 inches only)
Work your way up slowly, like you're dealing with precious threads
Section it if you need to (I usually do 4 parts)
The Washing Game-Changer Here's where most of us go wrong
Keep your head upright (I know it's tempting to flip upside down, but trust me on this)
Shampoo your scalp only, using your fingertips, not nails (think gentle massage, not scrub)
Let the suds run down naturally - no need to rough up the lengths
Conditioner goes mid-lengths to ends, with just a touch around your face frame
The After-Care ritual This is where the magic happens:
Pat dry - no vigorous rubbing!
Use a super soft brush or wide-tooth comb
Work from bottom up (seeing a pattern here?)
Be patient with knots - they're not in a race to get undone
My Secret Weapons After years of trial and error, these are non-negotiable:
Silk pillowcase
Silk scrunchies (those plastic spiral ones belong in the '90s)
Regular trims every 6-8 weeks
A gentle brush in your bag for emergency detangling
But Here's The Real Magic...
After years of helping women with extensions (which I still love and recommend for many), I knew we needed something more. Something that worked from the inside out. That's why my business partner Deb (a brilliant Trichologist , nutritional enthusiast) and I created Seed & Soul™.
I'll be honest - I'm usually terrible with supplements.
They sit in my cupboard giving me guilty looks.
But this is different. We packed it with active ingredients that actually work, no fillers, just pure hair-loving nutrition. And three months in?
My hair feels stronger, looks fuller, and I'm finding less of it in my brush.
We could have cut corners, used cheaper ingredients, made it more profitable.
But that's not why we created this.
We made it because we wanted something that actually worked - for us, for you, for every woman who's ever stood in front of a mirror wishing for more from her hair.
The Little Things That Make a Big Difference:
Ditch necklaces that catches your hair at your nape
Carry a brush (tangles turn into breaks if left too long)
Be gentle with bleach (yes, you can still colour your hair!)
Invest in good hair bands silk if you can (your hair will thank you)
Remember this: Fine hair doesn't have to be your forever story. But while you're on your journey to fuller, stronger hair, these tips will help you make the most of every strand.

P.S. If you're seeing more changes in your hair lately, know that you're not alone. Perimenopause throws us enough curveballs - but we've got your back (and your hair!)
